About Black Button Citrus Forward Gin
Specializing in grain-to-glass spirits, Black Button Distillery produces over 1,350 bottles of world-class spirits each week, and every batch is distilled, aged, bottled, labeled, and hand-numbered at the distillery. “We have a big philosophy here that the closer you are to nature, the better,” says Barrett. “Higher quality grains grown in specific ways yield better products.”
Black Button Distilling Citrus Forward Gin was crafted to work beautifully as a straight-up gin as well as in cocktails. “I’ve always had gin in gin & tonics and would often ask the bartender for extra lime or lemon wedges to tone down the juniper,” Barrett says. “When we began crafting our gin, I started with that toned down juniper note and a strong fruit forward taste.” Barrett found that opposed to lemon, zesty orange citrus seemed to work best. In addition, Black Button Distilling Citrus Forward Gin uses local hops in its recipe, offering complexity on the nose without excessive bitterness on the palate.
Black Button Distilling Citrus Forward Gin was called the “Official Gin of Summer” in 2015 by Food and Beverage Magazine.

About Black Button
In 2012, Jason Barrett became the head distiller and founder of Black Button Distilling – at only 24 years old. Coming from a family of the finest men’s suit buttons makers, worn by “Presidents, Popes, Kings, and Businessmen the world over”, Barret worked in his grandfather’s factory when he was younger, but soon realized he wanted to carve out his own path.
After graduating, Barrett returned to his hometown of Rochester, New York, to follow his passion – make whiskey and open a craft distillery, the first in Rochester since Prohibition times. Named Black Button because of a family inside joke – Barret is color blind and the family always joked that they’d need to produce only black buttons if we were to take over the family business – every small batch of Black Button spirits is made from local NY grains with over 90% of ingredients grown or produced in New York State. Everything from corn, wheat, rye, and barley to dairy cream and apple cider comes from family farms in New York State to support local and sustainable agriculture. They even grow their own juniper for Black Button gin at the Black Button Farm in South Bristol. Besides whiskey and gin, Black Button’s wide range includes vodka, moonshine, and liqueur.
About Gin
According to Winston Churchill, “The gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen’s lives and minds than all the doctors in the Empire,” referring to the British officers using it to treat malaria in India.
Initially made for medicinal purposes, gin gets most of its flavor from the juniper berries added after the distillation process. It sure has come a long way from the Middle Ages, with the introduction of new botanicals, fruits, and spices, bringing it closer to people of all flavor varieties.
